Kali on Shiva's Shava

Kali is Shiva's Shakti in her most dynamic form. As a woman, she is full of motherly affection, kindness and tenderness but at the same time, she is the goddess of blood and destruction. Her skin is downright black and she is always represented as having wild instincts.

The image of the goddess as the destroyer is quite graphic – necklace of human heads, a girdle of human hands, a sword in hand. Kali, shown here with ten arms, holds a weapon in each hand and, of course, a chopped head in one. Her tongue hangs out, craving for hot blood. After feasting on Raktabija's blood, Kali became so intoxicated with the lust of battle that she threatened to destroy the entire world in her fury. The world was saved when Shiva intervened and calmed her.

In this metal image, Kali is shown dancing violently on a prostrate Shiva. This signifies many things – her triumph in general, the limits of time and in some cases Shiva, bereft of his power, when his Shakti has emanated itself and left him.
