Mohan Sharma (Tarun Bose) hates his newborn daughter Uma, as he holds her responsible for her mother’s death. He despises her by day, and adores when drunk at night. She grows up in this atmosphere, silent, submissive, and subdued. The film is about Uma’s coming of age and her relationship with a sensitive poet Ashok (Dharmendra) who slowly brings her out of her shell.
